Time To Change Your Agency

Having been in the industry a few years now, first as an actor and now as casting agent there are two things that I have learnt. First and most important is that, agents can only send you out if something you fit comes up for casting. The other is that once signed up with an agency as an actor, it is my responsibility to make sure that I am available for all such castings as I am invited to participate in. Availability also means that I am both present physically and mentally prepared to give my best performance to the casting director. Whereas as director, it means that I am physically present to give guidelines and moral support to my casts at auditions.

I get calls and emails everyday from my casts asking why they haven’t landed any roles in productions over a given period of time. I often encourage and let them know that everyone ultimately gets their big break, although I must confess that sometimes I am tempted to ask them to sign up with other agencies to see if they might have better luck there. Which brings us to the question: “How do you know when it’s time to change your agent?”

Casting Agencies exist primarily to get you out there as a talent and make revenue as a result. In between is an array of processes which include photo-shoots, marketing, training and the like. The globally acceptable standard of any successful agent is to send you out to at least seven auditions in any given calendar year. If you have attended all seven and not been successful, then maybe it’s time for change!

It is good to do a background check on agencies to find out their strengths in relation to your modeling or acting aspirations before putting pen to paper. Sadly, most models make multiple applications to different agents and go with the first one that responds and looks promising enough to make their dream for fifteen seconds of fame achievable. They realize that this is not the case a few auditions down the line. Likewise, some models sign up with more than one agency at a time in a bid to maximize on the scarce opportunities available for modeling and acting. Although there’s absolutely nothing wrong in that since most agencies are non-exclusive, it doesn’t augur well professionally for you as a “newbie”.

One important aspect that is commonly overlooked is numbers. Numbers play a pivotal role to your success in any agency. In agencies where the roster runs up to thousands of casts, it may be an impediment to your individual success since you might have to compete with other members from within the same agency to get noticed before you compete with casts from other agencies at open auditions. On the converse, it may work well for you because some producers prefer to work with large agencies where they have access to variety. Smaller agencies offer you the chance for personalized attention. Either way, the end result is determined by your agent’s strength in marketing you as a talent.

My advice is, subscribe to ONE agency that portrays strong potential and develop your skills while at it. Such development entails attending all auditions you are called to, updating your modeling portfolio and casting profile, attending industry related events, networking with fellow models and actors, especially the more established ones and searching the internet for any relevant opportunities and trainings or workshops. I often encourage my casts to “freelance” but maintain loyalty to the agency. There are lots of gigs out there run by the smaller stakeholders who cannot afford the services of casting agencies. These not only offer you the opportunity for growth and experience, but also prepare you for the much awaited big break! After all success in this business as has been said many times before, is 10% talent and 90% hard work.

If at any point during your membership in a given agency you feel your needs are not being met, discuss this with your manager in a sober and professional manner. They would be a position to point out the mistakes you are making and/or recommend to you another agency that you are best suited for. Parting is such sweet sorrow, but if you are not getting any jobs you are not making them any money, and any good casting agent will not stop you from leaving.
